While i am reluctant to give panadol for a mild fever without any discomfort, i do give it for a high fever or where their fever shoots straight back up even after a tepid bath. I have watched one of my bubs fit and ever since then have been much more wary of fevers. While i understand that a fever is the body's natural response, i would really like to avoid another fit.

I agree with what the others have said and also have a little one who convulses so I tend to give paracetamol so we don't have a fit. My sis is a paramedic and she always says two things, where did you take the temp (under the arm, not in ear for a baby) and if it gets over 39.5 (under the arm) reduce the temp. Babies are much more sensitive to their temps going up and down and it's easy for them to dehydrate, convulse etc, a temp that lasts longer than 48 hours should always be seen to just in case. Anyway, that's always been her advice to me and I tend to follow it 'cos I figure she knows a little about it since she's a paramedic and doesn't tend to over-worry. Hope Claire feels better after her sleep!
Nothing worse than a sick bubs

I have to admit, I don't have a thermometer to check Alex's temp. But when his cheeks get flushed & he starts gettting distressed, that's when I give panadol, although I've really only had to give it for teething so far. I know how yucky & uncomfortable I feel when I have a temp.

Don't have much to add, but if you are worried about fits, or have a child with a history of fits, don't put them in the bath when they have a fever
The bath is a bad baaaad place to have a fit and it is likely to make a temp shoot up anyway due to causing shivering when they get out. Most cooling measures make a person with a temp hotter anyway as the temperature control system goes a bit haywire during a fever.

I had an ear thermometer and underarm - if they get a temp I give panadol. Brandon woke up yesterday with a temp 39deg so we gave panadol and it came back down.
If I had a temp I'd take a pandol, so see if the same with kids. |

we give homepathics unless there is also an illness and then give panadol if its reaches close or over 40 degrees.
The homeopathics alone are usually enough to bring the temp down.

There was a study done recently (it was reported on a news site) that parents who dose their kids incorrectly for fevers are putting them at risk of liver damage... basically, make sure you're giving the correct dosage for weight, and don't overmedicate at the first sign of fever. Kira's only had a fever once, and it didn't get to 40, but we just made sure she had lots of sleep and gave her a tepid bath, and kept her as cool as possible (it was a stinking hot day). She had no symptoms except she vomited twice, so we still have no idea what she fought off, but fight it off she did. There are different schools of thought regarding panadol and fevers, I guess you could always google and see what you find too!
![]() Hope she is feeling better soon, they're not pleasant things but they're not the worst thing in the world, I'm sure she'll be happy as harriet in not time!
