OK...who here toilet trains and what do you do? With my first I actively toilet trained and she was dry during the day from about her 1st birthday and then nights by 2. But it was hard work and took up so much of my time. When #2 came along being premmie and all...I just let her dictate to me what she was ready for. One night at 3 I forgot to put her night nappy on and she was totally dry in the morning and has been since...DD#3 was trained at Daycare with just one day a week at 2yrs and took me by surprise when her nappy was always dry and she would just take it off and go to the toilet. I haven't started yet with DD#4 but have noticed she is showing signs of making an attempt at least. Where should I start? What works the best for you?

i started whn my son could tell me he was wet he was showing that he was interested in the toilet and he was not impressed with wet nappies.
all i did was put him in jocks and then ask him every 1/2 hr if he needed to wee. take him to the toilet after an hr if he hadnt wee'd and that is about it. as i said though he was totally ready and able to understand and communicate this. oh and liam def watched me n dp on the loo was all part of being interested

She see's us all go to the toilet as we don't have a toilet door hehehehehe...stalled renovations!! She will tell me before or right as she poos....hates to be wet...but is affraid of the toilet/potty. I just don't know what to do to get her to not be affraid of it? If I can get her to sit on it...she gets this terrified look when she realises she is going to poo and not in a nappy...so she hangs on till I put it back on. Do you think this sigifies being ready or not being ready? I am totally happy either way..but don't want to be just ignoring her if she is ready to train...IYKWIM???

not wuite ready i think. if she is fearful it will make tt very hard . liam was the same so we left it for another few mths. he also has a bright colored step n seat thing which we really talk up as his 'special ' toilet seat and that kinda worked . poos are the hardest to get them to do in the lool also. concentrate on getting her to start to wee in the loo or potty 1st

lol rhianna yup ! also dont be afraid to leave it longer i have friends whose 3 - 4yo's are only just getting there (girls) and some friends boys who are fully tt at 2 1/2 ! so they are all different.
one other thing i make sure that liams special seat is on the toilet so that he can go whenever he needs to , that the light is on and door open. might be harder with older kids tho they could just use the seat too it wouldnt hurt lol eta - i think out toilet seat thig is a safety 1st it was about 30 but has a seat and 2 steps so good for littlies

We have done child-led everything until toilet learning. We are deep in the process now. What have we done? Lots of nappy free time with subsequent peeing on the floor. Lots of sitting on the potty waiting for a wee. Once we got that first wee (a few weeks ago, after a loooooong time of doing this off and on, say 6 months) I explained to her how her nappies are getting too small but her undies fit. This line of thought appealled to her when none had before (she is pretty pragmatic in all things so no suprise really).
So lots of weeing in undies and on the floor and lots of "you should do that in the potty" talks - no shaming but letting her know it's not what we want. We had house guests for a week and all progress made was LOST then they left and she has rebounded and started wee'ing in there without being prompted - today is the best day so far she has done all 4 wees - 3 all in, one started on the floor then she ran to the potty, plus her first poo on it. I think seeing Kate's Jack do wees in a potty without being told to sit on it really was a break through LOL I finally decided a few days ago that this is hard going but I'd rather do it now than later and I had some signs she was physically ready - holding wees in, just not doing them where we wanted! Even a few months ago it seemed she had very little idea what was going on and I think the wee everywhere approach was required for her to get back her bodily awareness. I would have preferred her to take the charge like other people's kids have, it all seems so much easier when the kid is invested in getting it right, whereas I have had to motivate her to do it. But her nappies were simply not working anymore, was not prepared to invest again in a new daytime stash at 3 years old. At no point have I felt like I have known what I am doing, but I guess she is finally getting it regardless LOL Poor kid! |
