Your theory sounds right to me. We had issues with pockets for sleeps due to the same reasons - wee run-off on a side-sleeper.

Well the eco-disposables are a bit too much for our budget to cope with on an ongoing basis. I am still totally haggard from changing DD's nappies five times a night. I have realised that it's not when she wees that is waking her, but I think it's the wetness that always gathers around her leg that she is sleeping on...

I mean, I have never had any leaks out of the BBB with a BB wool cover, but the wetness on her skin is what makes her wakeful. I bought some MM fleece a while ago that was (all! grrrr!) cut up by my over-enthusiastic DP into liners - I am going to sew a few together tonight to make a big square to entirely cover the inside of the nappy - leg to leg.

I've been boosting with the normal snap in booster and then another bamboo booster the same size, which is three layer. The long snap in ones make the nappy too bulky for DD who is on the last snaps of the littlest size. If my liner 'squares' don't help, tomorrow night I'm borrowing my friend's Wild Child to see if they live up to the hype. I was reading on another thread that a lot of people boost between the nappy and the cover - but as my only BB wool cover is a small, I think I could only squeeze one prefold in there - and I don't know that it would help much, because it's the sides that are the problem.

I can't figure out if I have a heavy wetter or it's purely the side sleeping that is the problem. Sigh. My eyes are falling out of my head. I really would like an night AIO with magic sides!

Beth

Oh no Beth - sounds like you are having an awful time. You could try a PUL cover if bulk is a problem. I hear you about the cost of the 'sposies. I wince every time I buy them. DD is such a heavy wetter that I change her in the night even with a 'sposie. The other day she drank 750 mls of water plus 2 bottles, plus 3 breastfeeds (I think she had a sore throat) and she outwet every nappy I put on her even in the day.

Are you sure it's the wetness waking her? My DD1 was a terrible sleeper and I used to be up to her multiple times a night. She was in full-time sposies (I'm more educated now) so it wasn't the wetness for her - she was just a terrible sleeper.

I hope you find a solution and get yourself some sleep.

Miaow

a few things occurred to me, reading your post

1. you are exhausted and frustrated - know that one well (my bub doesn't sleep much)
2. did you know that night covers often need to be a size bigger than day covers? like if your bub wears a SMALL cover for day nappies, they may well need a MEDIUM cover for night nappies? This seems to be cos day nappies could be - say six layers of absorbency in total, whereas, a night nappy can easily be 12 layers of absorbency in total. And the absorbent fabrics (bamboo, hemp), well the more you have of them, the more room they take up.
3. the wild child you are going to try out, unless you have a cover BIG enough to 100% cover it all, it's not really giving it a fair chance to work. So i hope whoever is lending you the wildchild, is also going to lend you a suitably big enough night cover to go over it.
4. what weight Malden Mills fleece did your partner cut up into liners? if it's the 100wt, that will work as a stay dry liner.
the 200wt is used (double layer) for nappies, the 300wt and windpro are used for nappy outers as they are water repellant.
Microfleece from spotlight is fine for the stay dry liners, the bub wees, the fluid travels THRU the stay dry liner, gets soaked up in the absorbent layers below (the hemp and bamboo for e.g) then the fluid goes no further, cos there is the water repellant outer (PUL or Malden Mills 200 doubled, or single layers 300wt).
5. there is also a Heavy Wetter thread in this section - have you read that one?
i'm scratching my brain trying to think of somethign to help you - but i'm a bit stuck.

i don't have a side sleeper so don't have any pearls to offer you, wish i did! i hear how frustrated you are.

but in the night nappy struggles thread, i always read about OUTER boosting the areas where your child wets the heaviest - so for a side sleeper, dunno if that means they sleep on ONE particular side, or swap side to side thru the night, but all i can think of, would be to put boosters near the leg bits of the nappy. A prefold at the leg bit might be too bulky, but a skinny booster near the leg, that might suit better.

good luck, i hope the wild child works for your bub.

Oh bummer Beth...

the only other thing I can think of is 'bed prepping' but that doesn't fix the prob of the Little One getting wet... what about kinda like Bilby said, but flongies or longies, with snap in or stitched in or lay in (tuck one end in the nappy leg) booster...?

I had the same problem, but found boosting between the nappy and cover fixed it.

i was thinking about BED PREPPING too Kristy, just didn't know how to word it

in the ball park of
felting an old woolen blanket and laying that under the bub
or
putting bubs to sleep on a piece of sheepskin (wool breathes really well)

sort of the kind of advice i've read in threads about helping kids Night TT.

yep that's the kinda thing
something 'stay dry' on the top with absorbency under, and something to protect the mattress/bed
that way if it does wet through it tends to not wet them esp if they have flongies or longies on

Thanks for all the comments

She is a good little sleeper - generally I feed/change her and she doesn't really even wake up. Tonight I tried my MM squares (they're the 100wt ones - I also had microfleece from spotlight, but found the MM better) - didn't help, as her nappies were soaked at 12am, and at 3am (i.e. now). I put a three layer bamboo booster (like the ones inside the BBB) on the outside of nappy in between wool cover - the front half of it was soaked too. Am going to try a prefold inside a bigger pul cover next change....

I had thought of 'bed prepping' and when I was trying the BG2 on her at night I had her on a piece of thick wool blanket - but the thing is, the BB wool cover NEVER leaks - that is not my problem. I have given my friend the heads up about a large cover - and if she doesn't have a wool one spare I have some bigger BB pul ones that I hadn't thought of using.

I'm just wondering whether BBB are just not cutting it for us as a night nappy? I'll have to see how the Wild Child goes - of course I'm not really sure I understand about these more expensive special night nappies - they're not supposed to make it through the night in just one, are they? And therefore, if you need more than one, it gets very pricey!

Haven't experimented with the flongies/longies option. I have some reservations about wool on her skin, because I have eczema and can't wear wool - but I suppose trying it for a night wouldn't hurt. You're right, bilbylove, exhausted and frustrated! Especially since I know she would probably sleep longer if she didn't feel wet!! Those liners are great, but just can't stand up to the flood beneath them!

YAWN!!

Oops - and I meant to say I'll check out the heavy wetters thread - now that I've realised that's what she is!!
