i only had 4 NB and never used them all.
You can always order more, and use snibs as well.
Also had only 2 smalls.
we used woolies as well, and how many of them depends on your budget i think. A total of 2 would have been fine.
i have 4 newborn ones... and 6 small ones..... for my little guy .. thinking thatll be plenty for him too begin with.. still need some woolies and stuff tho for nights....
I had about 4 PUL and 2-3 woollen. I ended up using the knitteds alot more as they seemed so much softer on little legs. But if your bubba is a explosive pooper don't go knitted until those poops stop![]()
If you was every 2nd day I think 4-6 PUL covers should be enough as you usually use 2 per day in rotation. If you are getting alot of poo explosions then you may wants to buy a couple of cheap fleece covers for emergencies.

i have cheap pvc covers and fluffies ones and i have a fleece cover too... and 2 florties on there way...
I got a range of covers but mostly they are too big - DS is not 4kg yet and a long skinny type baby. I had no idea what to get before he was born.I would recommend 4 PUL covers (can get by with three but four is easier). They are excellent for containment. The Bummis NB with leg gussets (just getting to the snug fit stage at 4 weeks), the thirsties NB with leg gussets (my favourite at the moment), Bummis whisper wrap (ok but no leg gussets). I have two bubblebubs AIO that I use when all the covers are in the wash. I don't change the cover every nappy change - only if it is wet on the leg gussets. If you are hesitating because you are wondering whether it is worth the money, then in my experience the $20 is soooooo worth it!!!!!
I haven't used a disposable yet because the bamboo terry pre-folds, snappi and cover have worked without fail. DS sometimes goes red and screws up his face with the effort of the poo'splosion so there is some force being applied here.
I have a totsbots flexiwrap, a baby behinds small, a bambieno one and another tots bots one (blue with stars) that are all a but too big just yet.

I bought quite a number of NB covers and they're worth their weight in gold!!
I have about 6 (4 Thirsties XS & 2 Bummis SWW NB), plus 1 NB fleece cover and 1 Bummis Superbrite small size.
On a bad day DD2 soils all of them and then I have just 2 left to rotate between changes.
They dry quickly though after washing.
Overall I love Thirsties.
- If the cover is soiled and the gussets/FOE are still clean, I can just rinse it off and airdry in the bathroom, it dries in a few hours. Same with BUmmis Superbrite.
- For a XS cover it seems to have a wider crotch than the Bummis Superbrite Small size (not sure how wide the crotch is for NB Superbrites). Better for nb poosplosions, and for use with prefolds/trifolds. BUmmis SWW NB have no gussets but the crotch width is similar overall to Thirsties XS.
- Thirsties NB has an umbilical cut out to accommodate the cord. Bummis SWW had a higher rise on my little bubba, hence I did not use them till the cord fell off.

ETA: If you are using flats, or if your baby is born bigger, your baby may not require NB sizes and go straight into smalls. If buying new, check with your vendor if they could exchange your (unwashed, unworn) covers that don't fit your baby to covers that fit.
I have woollen covers too but I think I'll hold off til Bri is a bit older and has more predictable pooing habits![]()

I use fitteds half of the time and I had waaaaaay too many covers. I use about 3 wool covers and 1 fleece one. The nappies I had were great at containing poo though, so I've only had poo leaking 3 or 4 times.

My last LO had clinically diagnosed diarrhea, I had 8 NB covers and found that was fine, we had at least 5-6 dirty nappies a day tho and most leaked thru everything, think yellow water, no curds etc at all![]()
I'm researching stashes for newborns too! Where do you get Thirsties covers?
