Hi all
I previously used GNST for night nappies. I found them to be absolutely wonderful while they lasted however I'm really disappointed with their durability. I bought 6 of them brand new (used them on 2 babies simultaneously) and after 10 months they are completely unusable. They've never been put in the drier never used nappisan or bleach etc, all my other nappies (terry baby beehinds) are still going strong after 4+ years of use. With the GNSTs all the bamboo material has torn out of the snaps and the actual bamboo material is degraded to the point where it is pretty much just a microfleece liner. I calculated that using these night nappies has cost me more than using disposables overnight...disappointing.
So where did I go wrong. Is bamboo not as durable as terry? Was I unrealistic to expect the GNSTs would last longer than this? I researched the GNSTs initially and justified the amount of money I spent because they were so highly recommended. Any recommendations on a night nappy that will really last the distance?
I've actually had the opposite experience to you with the GNST nappies. I bought mine when the bamboo ones were first released (I'm guessing I've had it about 18mths???) and of all my night nappies I'd have to say it is in just about the best condition. It has been used in a fairly large rotation but still looks almost new. Bamboo and fleece are perfect.
There was a thread recently about bamboo disintergrating in nappies which lots of people put down to very toxic teething wee - don't know if this would relate to your problem.
You could always contact Bubblebubs to discuss your concerns. I've always found they have outstanding customer service and are lovely to deal with.
definitely worth having a chat to bubblebubs about it.
however...
I would have to say that I don't think that bamboo in general is as hard-wearing as hemp or cotton.
night nappies get much harsher use than day nappies too - to make a gross generalisation, they get totally soaked with strong urine overnight, often will be on for 12+hrs at a time, and are usually on a higher rotation than day nappies because of their specialised function. with 6 nappies being used on 2 babies, you'd pretty much be using each nappy every 2nd or 3rd day, which is a pretty high rotation - I'm guessing in 10mths that each nappy would have been worn/washed somewhere between 100-150 times, and depending on how often you wash, they would spend probably 2 days out of 3 sitting in a nappy bucket (or maybe 1 out of 3 if you're washing every day).
I too would be disappointed that they aren't lasting the distance, but like I said, I do feel that the bamboo fabric is less durable than the hemp and cotton fabrics.
I personally think its down to specific batches of bamboo, I brought a well known night nappy & hardly used it at all Because it wasn't a good fit for Mia but the booster didn't hold up to well to washing. I noticed it just inside the stitching
But having said that I have another Much loved night nappy that was used alot & held up perfectly with not a sign of wear. (this was made from bamboo also, both fleece)
IA about the batches for sure Aimee. I have definately noticed differences in each batch I have received . However, what Bek has said is true too - bamboo just isnt as durable as hemp thats for sure.
