    Default Hemp allergy?

    Hi

Not really sure if this is the place to post this but, anyway.

We recently bought some Baby Beehinds Hemp. We also have several of the bamboo. I've noticed though, that when our LO wears the hemp she becomes swollen and red and irritated wherever there has been wet nappy in contact with her skin.

It's not a detergent thing as we use soapnuts on everything.

I've only used the nappies three or four times but it's happened every time. I guess I won't be using them any more but I was wondering if anyone else had had something like this happen?

    TIA

    Ali

I have definitely heard of people being allergic to hemp. Lucky there are other options now

Hope your little one heals quickly.

There are oils in the hemp fibres, so perhaps she is reacting to that. You could try washing the nappies half a dozen times before trying them on her again.

    Thanks everyone.

I'm washing them with every nappy load for a while to see if that helps.

Her bot is getting much better now, thanks.

We have been having more and more severe reactions to our hemp nappies over the past year. We didn't use them for weeks, and then did for 3 nappies in an emergency. I wish I'd bought sposies - the reaction would have been less severe.

Most of them are two years old, some more, and we don't get reactions with the bamboo or cotton nappies. This is an issue which has built up over the past year, so I had no idea what might be causing it. I never thought of an allergy to hemp. I think I'll make a booster out of some old hemp prefolds and try that inside a cotton nappy when he's all healed (very inflamed now) to see if it's hemp or just those specific nappies.

Sorry for hijacking. I never thought of this as a possibility, so you've got my mind going in circles because we may be onto a possible cause/solution.

This is bizarre, I've had this happen twice with my dear daughter. Although not with hemp. Last night was the second incident. She was wearing an organic cotton all in one nappy ( it's one from Foodland called Bio Baby that was given as a gift by someone that knows very little about the cloth world! She is TT during the day and rarely even wees in her nappy at night anymore which is why I can use such a poorly made nappy on her. Its organic cotton though so I didn't think that it should have caused a reaction. Her whole bottom half is swollen and red anywhere that the nappy touched. I thought maybe she didn't drink enough and maybe that was why her wee was so potent? Just trying to find a cause! It almost looks like her skin has been burnt.

Yep possibley because her wee is so potent. And she is now sleeping in the one position more, and is heavier.

We went through a terrible episode with my DD last year (I think it was... the ladies here might remember). It was horrible, DD also suffers from eczemas that can flare easily... so we were left with a flare and 'burns'.

Calendula ointment is what we used. But Lesley knows of a fantastic cream I can't remember the name of now... maybe see if you can get your hands on that. It is exxy but worth it apparenly. Or if you can't afford the exxy stuff, I recommend Calendula for sure.

And get her drinking heaps more water!! It really does work to mellow it down.

Happened to us too but that because I put it directly to my daughter's skin without a liner. The fabric is starchy so it irritated her a lot and caused red patches all over her nappy area. Once I started putting a liner on, it's better. My daughter has eczema though so her skin is already very sensitive.
