Default newborn nappy troubles- leakage and prefolds

    Hi guys,

Xavier is now 1 week old and I am having newborn nappy issues. I'd welcome any help.. pretty please.
    • The Prefolds I have bought are huge and I reckon they would fit me, so can't use them on Xavier unless I can fold them in quarters or something. So how can I use them as pads inside covers? I have lots of them that are just being wasted.
    • Most of fitteds leak wee up the sides (which then warrants a whole clothes/ bed change) even with good covers with gussetts and even when ensuring thatthe covers cover the entire nappy. Xavier is normally changed once every 3 hours in the middle of a feed or as he needs it (if he poos during a feed as well). The only nappies that haven't leaked wee are the Cute Tooshies Bamboo Delight (still bit big but are good) and the magicalls and the bumgenius AIO (not tried either of these at night time, though).
    thanks everyone in advance

when the fitteds leak wee up the sides are they drenched?
    or still dry?
the former, I'd say change more often or boost
the latter I'd say possibly repelling from manufacturing residue?
but no idea how it's gettong out the nappy covers

Most are second hand so shouldn't be a manufacturing issue.

I just don't want to have wasted my money...

The covers are great but dunno how they allow the wee to leak up the sides...

what would I use as boosters?

are the covers being done up tight enough?
how big are the prefolds? if you fold the back down before folding the sides in and fanning out the top, that should help make them smaller to fit.

boosters - anything absorbent will do. my favourite boosters when Ben was little were facewashers folded in half and then in half again to make a 4 layer long skinny pad.

I think the covers are tight enough- I am stretching them as much as I can..

The prefolds all seem to be the same size- almost the size of a terry flat.. I am annoyed as had I realised that at the time, I would have just used the terry flats I have!! I thought I could just make a pad which would be quick and easy but they would go up to his underarms! I will try the suggestion re the folds, but I will probably need to use a medium cover over the top.. I will try it out (pity he hates being changed and unwrapped!!).

if they are drenched then it's simply the nappy is at capacity and can't
    physically hold any more -
    it's like asking a 2litre bucket to hold 2.5litres it doesn't work
so boosting is your option there.
    little bubs pee LOTS
3 hours is a while in terms of NB and how much they pee iykwim

covers - as above, tight enough, good fit, no nappy poking out the sides and no singlet hanging in to 'wick' the pee...

? try those? then we'll see what's next
(sorry short/blunt replues - typing stnading lol)

    HI
My DS is 2 months and I have had the same trouble. There are some great prefold nappy folding techniques on a website called ozclothnappies.org. Just follow the link to 'how to fold a prefold'. I found the 'jelly roll' and the'bikini twist' particularly good.

What are the actual sizes of the prefolds? They sound huge. I have found 30x35cm a great size on NB's and also the perfect size for inside pocket nappies.

I really like Donnas prefolds - HERE

Having said that, if your bubba is soaking a CT then a prefold might not be absorbant enough anyway. I put 1 or 2 boosters down the centre of my prefolds (3 layers of bamboo each) and it seems to work quite well. She also wears a CT boosted at night as I dont change her anymore between feeds at night.

The 30x35cm prefolds were a smidge too big to fit under an XS thirsties so I folded the front down under the cover. She wasn't sleeping on her belly so the bulk didn't matter. I dont like to put too much bulk under her bum.

i was changing my nb as needed, or maximum, every 1.5 - two hours. We were feeding every two hours and she usually needed a change before AND after every feed. Hmm, i was a zombie.

we used bamboo foldups 30cm x 30cm. you can get prefolds in all different sizes. I found folding down the big prefolds just didn't work at all for us. it made things so bulky, then i had problems with getting the covers to close right. only thing that worked was using the nb sized stuff with the nb sized leg gusset covers.

i got newborn sized boosters from Sustainable Hemp Products - Australia - they are a great size for putting inside fitted nappies and i'm sure inside flats as well. they only made hemp ones when it was our turn, but i see now you can get bamboo ones.

I wouldnt need such megga nappies if Indi fed every 2 hours. She only feeds 4 hourly. I guess I could change her right before she goes to sleep and as soon as she wakes up?? Still would leave her in a nappy for a 3 hour stretch though. Thats why she is sooooo wet.
