Default Fear of the hole in the toilet/potty

ok so we have been having MAJOR issues with wee's and poo's everywhere, refussing nappies and not wanting a bar of the potty.

BUT tonight hubby managed to get him onto the potty (MIL scared the crap out of him a while back) he sat there for ages but hes now scared of the hole

He will only sit on the one potty i have that has a lid, and will only use it with the lid down.

How do i help him feel safe about the hole?

    TIA

I have heard of some people having success by laying a terry flat over the bowl of the potty for the child to sit on and gradually push it further into the potty so that they get used to sitting on more of a hole. Using a small potty can also help as they can see that their bottom will not slip into it and get stuck.
