    Default Lest We Forget

"ANZAC was the name given to the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps soldiers who landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey early on the morning of 25 April 1915 during the First World War (1914-1918).
As a result, one day in the year has involved the whole of Australia in solemn ceremonies of remembrance, gratitude and national pride for all our men and women who have fought and died in all wars. That day is ANZAC Day -- 25 April.
Every nation must, sooner or later, come for the first time to a supreme test of quality; and the result of that test will hearten or dishearten those who come afterwards. For the fledgling nation of Australia that first supreme test was at Gallipoli."
From the official ANZAC Day Website

However your family spends ANZAC day, please take a moment to remember those who have fought and died for our freedom and those who are currently representing our country in battle.

At the going down of the sun
    And in the morning
    We will remember them
    Lest We Forget

    Thanks Jo.
I could hear strains of the bugle playing the last post early this morning and the RAAF flypast went over our house. Very sobering and moving experience.

if you all get the chance - the denton doco/show on gallipoli looks very good - it's quite amazing when one has been to these places to see both sides. (invalides was another scary eye-opener even after years working with veterans)

so yes remember those anzacs and those who were/are on the "other" side

I wasn't able to go this year but last year I was able to attend the dawn service at the National War Memorial.

    Amazing.

    A very thoughtful day.

Has anyone actually been to Gallipoli? Would love to go one day when the kids are older and understand more of our history

no problem - give me a day or two ok - i'll get greg to remind me of stuff too.
didn't know it but i was pregnant at the time which is why a few things i walked out on as i really couldn't take it. but it really is a new awareness and an opinion changing/shaping experience.

I have also been to Gallipoli (1993).

It is such a moving place, so quiet and peaceful - now. My friend and I were with a couple of Canadian girls who said they had a 'feeling' just being there too (even though the Canadians had nothing to do with the Gallipoli campaign). To see the site where the ANZACs landed it is no wonder that we lost so many of them (the Turks actually lost more soldiers than Australia and NZ). To see the ages of some of the diggers... they were so young.
