Default Australia Day Competition - WINNERS!

Congratulations to ALL of the Wonderful Entries we Received. It was certainly difficult choosing winners, they were all fantastic for different reasons, some of them very personal and touching, so it's somewhat hard to pick "winners" from them.

That said, we do have prizes, so we do need winning entries. For those who didn't officially win, take heart in knowing that all of us at NC think your entry is wonderful.

Before we continue with the prize announcements I would like to take the opportunity to thank our very generous sponsors for donating a very exciting stash of prizes. As a small thank you to each of our sponsors we will be offering them a free Buy for Baby Banner Ad through February and March. Again, Thank you!

On with the winners!

Default Re: DRAFT -- And the Winners Are....

FIRST PRIZE - Nappies & Nappy Accessories

From the Maker....

"My entry is a woolen wet bag. It is made from recycled 100% wool (blanketing) fabric, hand dyed/painted with food dye. It fastens at the top with snaps. The embellishments are wool blend felt, some hand dyed and some bought already coloured. Polyester thread was used for the construction and embellishments."

"My entry depicts two events from my childhood - One scene is 'A day at the beach', the other is 'Maggie Season'. As a young child I lived quite close to the Gold Coast and have wonderful memories of my nana taking me to the beach - hence the beach scene. When I was of school age, we moved to the country - every spring, I would have to run the gauntlet with a very rogueish magpie, which lived between my house and the school. These childhood events are etched forever in my memory and they represent, for me at least, growing up in Australia. In conclusion, my entry is what Australia means to me on a personal level, but I hope that it's also something my fellow Aussies can relate to, maybe reminiscing about their childhood days at the beach, or even having a chuckle about that magpie that used to swoop them on the way to school!"

Congratulations Mandy!!

SECOND PRIZE - Nappies & Nappy Accessories

From the Maker....

"Medium "Wooly Wonders" Wonder soaker knitted in aran weight BFL. Elastic adjustable waistband (not added in photos)"

"When deciding on what to make for this competition, I thought about just what it is that makes Australia unique. The most obvious being its diverse range of plants and animals found only here. I chose to embellish this soaker with the Sturt's desert pea as its not only a striking image with the blood red and jet black flowers, it reminds me of why I use cloth in the first place. To leave as little imprint on our precious environment as possible."

Congratulations Kris!!

SECOND PRIZE - Clothing & Accessories

From the Maker....

"Entry is a strapless top and elastic waist skirt constructed from cotton fabric to suit our hot climate. Very simple design made to measure to fit my girls (well, almost Georgie!) To introduce a touch more patriotism I have also included side panels of ribbon featuring our Flag and the word Australia."

"My creation represents all that Australia is to me - which is pretty much summed up in our National Anthem - "Advance Australia Fair". There are 3 parts in our National Anthem in particular that gave inspiration to this outfit.

"Our home is girt by sea" - this is represented in the patchwork Australia surrounded by a deep blue background symbolising the vast oceans surrounding our nation.

"Our land abounds in Nature's gifts, Of beauty rich and rare" - the native Australia and all its diversity is such a very important part of my life as I love being outdoors. So the patchwork Australia is constructed using Wattle printed fabric, Bottlebrush printed fabric and yellow swirls. The yellow is representative of our gorgeous golden beaches, the wattle and bottle brush are symoblic of all our fabulous and unique native flora.

"Beneath our radiant southern Cross" The first line in our unused 2nd verse also has great meaning to me - not only are we fortunate enough to have such beautiful blue skies during the day, but we are blessed with such an amazing constellation by night. My representation of the Southern Cross is portrayed by the radiating pieces of Ric Rac on the top sewn in the exact layout of the Southern Cross. I also like to think the Ric Rac also represents the suns rays hitting our "sunburnt country" during the day.

So, Australia Day to me is all about celebrating this amazing country we are so fortunate enough to live in!"

Congratulations Theresa!!

THIRD PRIZE - Nappies & Nappy Accessories

From the Maker....

"My entry is a pair of crocheted "Sun, surf and sand" short shorties. I used all Aussie wool and dyes (of course!)... The wool is from Nundle Woollen Mills and each colour (including yarn for embelleshments) was hand-dyed using special combinations of Landscape dyes to get the right colours for the sky, water and sand of an Australian beach.
The sun and the tree were crocheted seperately, sewed on and then embellished with leaves / rays. They are crocheted using my own original pattern "

"It was very hard to think of one "thing" to represent what Australia means to me (actually I couldn't think of just one thing!) but since this item is made for a child, it made me think of my own childhood, and to me nothing sums up my happy Aussie childhood more than sunny, laid back beach holidays.

I used the pandanus trees and the colours of Mooloolaba beach, Qld (where I spent many happy holidays as a child) as my inspiration. I've kept the design quite simple to highlight the beautiful contrasting colours of a sunny day at the beach. "

Congratulations Lucy!!

THIRD PRIZE - Clothing & Accessories

From the Maker....

"Multicultural Australian Soaker made with 100% Pure Australian Wool 8ply(cleckheaton brand). Hand dyed with Lanscape dyes. Knitted using the Alice's Soaker Pattern. Embellishments embroidered using same wool."

"I have chosen to represent the multiculural aspect of Australia. I am proud to be part of a society where many cultures live in harmony (most of the time!)In my immediate family there have been at least 6 marriages that are of mixed cultures, so this is close to me. I have set the 3 different coloured people on a back ground that represents our environment - Sun, Sea & Sand."

Note that this entry was submitted to the clothing category mistakenly but I had already done the judging before Vicky realised she'd submitted to the wrong category, and ask knitted garments can be a clothing item or a nappy item, I felt that it was still quite eiligible for the clothing category.

Congratulations Vicky!!

AND LASTLY, WE HAD A LATE PRIZE DONATION AND THEREFORE ANOTHER PLACE!

From the Maker....

"Hemp fitted nappy, size medium. 2 body layers of hemp terry, one hand dyed, hidden soaker of 3 layers of bamboo terry and an inner layer of silky bamboo terry. Snap closure with the "southern cross" at the back which glows in the dark! Aussie Flag Bamboo/Hemp trifold booster."

"I have vivid memories of what the night sky was like when I lived in rural Tasmania. Away from the city lights and distractions the star were so bright and the sky so clear and immense. The stillness was breathtaking. I wanted to create a nappy that reminded me of that experience and what a awe inspiringly beautiful country we live it.
The Australian flag booster reminds me of the freedoms we enjoy in this country and the responsibilty we have to protect this fragile environment"

Congratulations Suzanne!!
