Hi there!
Yes, the leak out the side thing is something K was doing last year (and even with age the size of the night nappy is much the same, perhaps three hemp bigger).
I found two things that solved this (and actually thank you to Ali in the main for the solution - the heavy wetter guru!)
1. Getting rid of a microfleece liner and replacing it with a cotton one (muslin woven material, two to three layers depending on the quality of it) meant that any repelling the liner was doing due to past use of creams was eliminated and having cotton close to the skin overnight hasn't been a problem. I can use creams if needed and I can wash them out of the cotton, but not as easily, the fleece (which I use in the day).
2. The other important thing for us is to use the quick soak layer next in from the liner as Ali was saying, so that it absorbs the rush of wee. I used a small cotton washer to start with, but now use a microfibre cleaning cloth (mine is a Coles 2 pack yellow one - not all the cleaning cloths are a style that works). Microfibre is less bulky!

I've probably repeated what others have said, but at least I am one more Mum who has found an answer for my particular situation - and one that is superior to using disposables.

I'd liek to say a huuuuge thanks to Ali (mum2henry) for her 2 soaker system sugestion - it has saved me!!! DD would normally wear 2 nappies at night (a home-made hemp fitted with 2 body layers and all up about 6 or 8 (can't remember) layers in the wet zone, then a BBB, plus some extra microfibre and hemp boosting with a BB wool wrap over the top.

The last 2 night I've tried using 2 soakers and it's amazing!! So, DD had a BBB then wool soaker, then one or two microfibre and hemp boosters then the BB wool wrap. And the wool wrap was barely damp!!!

This is going to save me more washing and s slightly less complicted! Thank you so much!!

yeah Lori - glad it helped.

Getting a good night nappy solution often means a better night sleep for all those involved.

Love the two soaker idea Ali!
We're veterans of a two nappy system... and of the midnight sleepy nappy change. Nothing new to add to the great advice already posted

We use pockets (plain and print), and we use probably about 8 layers of hemp, 2 of cotton terry and a microfibre cloth folded so its about 3 layers.

I agree, hemp on bottom of the stack and microfibre on top. I usually like to put a cotton terry layer in between the hemp and microfibre too, to help with absorbing quicker.

or we use our bb hemp nappy with its 2 snap in boosters plus about an extra 2-4 layers of hemp and the microfibre 3 folded cloth, with a fleece cover.

in winter, polar fleece Pjs bottoms would probably be a good idea I think, and make sure no singlets or parts of the Pj top get into the nappy!

I can't believe how much difference a wool cover and a fleece line can make. I used to just put DS in a BBB and pul cover for night. He would wake at 4am every morning. Then I started wondering if he was waking hungry or wet. So I did a super nappy (for me, but sounds like it'd be a day nappy for you guys!) and I put a wool cover on, with a fleece liner next to his skin. Wouldn't you know it, he slept right through - 8 hours! - until DH's alarm went off. Next night, same thing. Night after that I didn't do the liner, and he was awake much earlier. Night after that, 11 hours!!!! Yay!

Yep, I love fleece liners (daytime use in my case). I vouch that they keep my DD as dry as a disposable except where she is sitting for any length of time (eg highchair, car). Aren't we blessed with modern fabrics?
