Question Terry Flats at night help hoped for.

I am hoping there is a terry expert out there somewhere that can help - we desperately need some sleep. We use terry flats almost exclusively (we were given a tots bots, a mother ease and a poplini) and we have tried to stop changing during the night and have a night nappy that lasts but there have been some problems and we would love advise from anyone out there that can help.

We use a terry flat and a flannel flat folded together with a flushable liner and a pul cover for nights, she has slep through with it once months ago. In the last couple of weeks she has regulary woken in the morning with every square inch of her nappy soaked. Thankfully we have had no problem with nappy rash - she does not seem to get it but I am concerned that the wetness is keeping her awake. Also, she has taken to sleeping on her side and the nappy in extraordinarilly bulky and it is difficult to move in let aloan roll on your side when you are half asleep.

We will purchase mcn night nappies if necessary but is there a terry solution out there or should we just go back to changing a few times a night?

You could try using one or two microfibre/hemp/bamboo boosters/trifolds inside your flats, that way you would not be bulking the nappy all over - just in the crotch section.

I use boosters made of 3 or so layers of hemp from Cherub's kiss, I have a collection of them
and then I put my hand made wool soaker over the top and it works really well
the nappy is always really wet on waking, but hasn't seeped through the wool

can be done with terry

I'd pad fold in either a second terry or a bamboo or hemp booster (trifolded flat, prefold, whatever works for you). I'd also try dumping the PUL, that retains all the moisture. I've found Luke's nappy to feel much drier in the morning under wool because it allows evaporation. Cooler, too.

Thanks guys, I'm starting to go mad from sleep deprivation. Milly has decided that she doesn't want o sleep longer than an hour day or night so needing something to help. My DP gave me a soaker for Christmas so as soon as I find the lanolin soap we bought I will be trying that and will get on the net now to see if I can find some boosters.

If she is waking then she is probably weeing when she wakes. More wakes mean more wees and a wetter nappy. I always did the terry flat with the flannel flat folded in a pad to boost before I had and MCN and it was most effective. Is that what you are doing or are you lying the 2 flats together and folding them like a double nappy? If you can put the flannel one in the wetzone it might be more effective. Give it a go and if it works you wont need to buy any extra boosters. And give that soaker a go!

Just wanted to let you know that most lanolin soaps would be inadequate for an initial deep lanolin treatment. They reduce the lanolin stripping in subsequent washes, but I doubt it will have enough free lanolin to deeply coat all the fibres. Do you have some Lansinoh or Purelan?

Bugger! My DP purchased it from a woman on ebay who spins her own wool and said that there should be some natural lanolin left in it. Do you think that will be enough? We also have a 2nd hand felted commercial wool cover, would I need to do a full on lanolin for that as well?

Sorry about the delay in replying, Milly decided to go balistic on me - stroppy about the fact that her Dad isn't here for the first time in 3 weeks. Grrrrrr.

Try rubbing it between your fingers - does it feel fluffy/"wooly", or a little greasy? You could dribble a little water on it, and see whether it beads, or immediately soaks right in.

Lanolising is really not a drama. Just grab some lansinoh from the chemist or from a friend with some leftover, and give it a whirl. You can find instructions either by searching here, or in the ozclothnappies FAQ.
