I do a sniff test - if the baby is awake and something smells bad (either lots of wee or poo), then I change the nappy. But if there's nothing nasty in there, then I leave be.

My girls only woke a couple of times before they knew it was just mum mucking around in the cot and then they were fine.
I found it better for us to change before I went to bed, then I knew the nappy would last the distance, otherwise they would wake crying anyway and then it would be harder to re-settle them. It just worked/works for us.

Lisa
you might be surprised, i can (usually) manage to change bree's nappy without her waking up!(i check her after she falls asleep jic she does wee/poo before falling asleep)
I would always wake up a sleeping baby who had a poo-ey nappy, much better than her getting awful nappy rash!

When he woke during the night we changed each feed. He started sleeping through (about 12 hours) at 7 weeks and we don't wake him up to change him.

I changed at night until about 3 or 4 months as there was often poo in the nappy. When I noticed a pattern of no poo for a while I went to not changing but used a bit night nappy like a VBSN so it was still dry around her bottom in the morning.

I haven't had to change Gabby over night since she was a few months old (I think?? Can't remember the exact age). We only switched to cloth at 12 months tho so I guess that's not really fair! LOL
I'll see how I go with Little Bee.
