Default TTing and limiting drinks before bed

Isabel often requests a drink of water and a drink of milk (both from cups) just before bed (either in the day or at night).

She has variable success staying dry over sleeps, and I feel that I should start limiting drinks before bed. This is causing some tension in the house as she keeps saying she is thirsty.

I'm trying to work out when should be no more drinks time - ie an hour before bed etc.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

Ali this was a issue in our house with Neve, even when she was three and four she would still want a drink before bed. It took a while for her to understand that to not go without nappies she had to not have a big drink before bed. She got the no drink part eventually but really she was still in pull ups until she was 5.5yrs. She just could control her bladder at night . Even at 6 occassionally she will have a wet bed.

She was a late learner at night. I know professionalls don't believe limiting their drink is the answer but I think it helps. If they don;'t have an overfull bladder then they won't wee as much IYKWIM.

I would wait until she understand totally and that might be when she is three and beyond.

They don't recommend it Ali

I don't believe in it either....So can't tell you if it works or not sorry

I would hate for someone to tell me I couldn't have a drink when I am thirsty so I don't do it to my kids....All my kids have a drink before bed and the only one we seem to be having problems with is Kane Getting sick of changing sheets

Thanks. Part of the problem is that Isabel uses it to string out going to bed. We're just about to put her in bed when suddenly she needs a drink, then another drink etc etc. Very frustrating.

my kids all have a drink before bed if they want it, and we get them to pee (or try to ) before going to bed too. Lukey occasionally has a wet bed if he's really tired and hasn't been to the toilet before going to bed (he's 5 1/2) but Ben seems to have a bladder of steel! He was night dry for at least 12mths or more before he was day trained, I was just too chicken to put him to bed without the nappy!

Totally agree with this

I think you need to be sensible about it though. One drink is understandable but two or three in a row sounds like playing games. You'll know if she's really thirsty

When they are ready to night train, I don't think a drink really makes a difference. Just like us, they know to wake up and go to the toilet before 'letting go'.

ohh we have the same issues ali. Maybe a pay off thing, if she sits on the potty to do a wee before bed then she get a milk bought into her when shes tucked in. Bryn used to use drinks ans wees as an excuse, which he has now taken to the next level and will purposely wet the bed, knowing that showers, clothes changes, striping, wiping down and remaking the bed buys hims quite abit of time little horror!

We had wet wetting issues with DSS. It was advised to us that he should have about 1.5ltrs of fluids throughout the day. This way his bladder became bigger and stronger so it was able to cope overnight without wetting iykwim. I dont think limiting drinks is the answer, however, if she is using it as an excuse then maybe there is another way to manage it. DSS has to have a glass of water (or at least a drink) after he brushes his teeth before bed. That way if he says he is thirsty as soon as he gets in bed we know he isn't. However, if he asks for a drink 30 mins or so after bed then we do allow it as he very well could be by then.

We don't limit drinks here either. Chelsea still has a bottle of milk before bed (around 250-300ml) & she has a 250ml cup of water on her bedside table that is nearly always empty by the morning. We probably get around 1 wet bed a week (she's only been in knickers overnight for about a month-6 weeks now) but most nights she will get up at least once (if not twice ) a night to go to the toilet.
