Toilet Training

OK Gracie has started getting more and more aware (e.g. she will say poo poo just before or just after having one and bot bot for wees most of the time). Tbh I haven't given a thought to toilet training as I think that it just happens when they are ready. I am in no great rush to toilet train but just wanted to know, because she is doing these things and tbh she gets a funny sad look on her face when she goes in her nappy now!, would it be good to get a potty for her etc etc? What are the first steps?

You know I was just thinkiing about this last night before I went to sleep (yes, my life is that interesting )
Things I found helped:
* bare bum time as much as possible- not so good if you have carpets but maybe when you go outside let them be nappyless
* letting them see you use the toilet so they know what its for (I don't get much choice in this- ellie will barge in no matter what )
* toilet seat with ladder- this has been invaulable and means she can get on and off the toilet by herself
* undies didn't work for us until recently- she would just think she had a nappy on and wet them. Now she knows the difference she is fine but I think in the beginning nothing on is easier.

anyway, would be interested to hear other's tips

Bec - there is no harm getting a potty and just casually keeping it somewhere like next to the toilet or in the lounge room. Keep a pile of potty books close by so that Grace can sit on the potty and read books (I found the longer you can keep them sitting on the potty, the more chance you can catch a wee and then they can start to make the association - wee goes in potty)
Nappy free time outside is essential. My girls were bush wee trained long before they were toilet trained lol.
If the potty/toilet all of a sudden becomes a negative issue (and it can no matter how unpressured you make it all) Just put it away for a while and bring it out again later.

DS asks for the potty but doesn't do anything and at other times freaks out and starts crying if I take his nappy off for nappy free time and runs to get me a nappy to put back on him
I like the ladder idea, might try that

last night his nappy was completey dry but de didn't want the potty this morning, just wanted a new nappy on
I can't wait until it is all over

its good that shes becoming aware. maybe im lazy but i like to make sure they really know before they go (not just after).. when bree started saying 'poo' before she did a wee (id know cause id check her nappy and it was dry, then the wee/poo happened soon after) then i would start the no pants on at home thing (for bree ). give it a few days, you'll soon see if they get the potty abit or not at all. at first i'd have to yell 'stop' at bree when she starting peeing on the floor, then rush her to the potty. then she got the idea and either takes herself before a wee, or stops herself then goes so far we've only got 2 free range poos (phew!) - the rest have been in a nappy (she still wears them to bed and when out). i just try to ask her to go in the potty before bed, bath, outings etc.

oh yeah, if shes not interested or its too hard/too much mess - leave the nappies on abit longer but keep the potty around
