We just had the potty in the bathroom next to the toilet and encouraged her to sit with us, wearing a nappy or not. She's always helped wipe up accidents since about 12 months, so she was pretty aware, and one day about 21 months she was naked and ran and did it in the potty. After that she would ask for her nappy to be taken off if she needed to. When we went out we still put her in nappies for a while, but she would ask to go to the toilet.

and can also lead to serious psychological problems if it is forceful and fear-inducing. Psychology is really into looking at how children were TT to understand personality disorders and traits such as Obsessive compulsive disorder.

mmm about
Brooke - 12-18mths begun... Jake was born when she was two and they were both in terries so she was about 2 and a half ish by the time she was 'fully' TT ie reliably without accidentsJake - 18mths - 24mths begun - he was closer to 3+ when he was fully TT with still the odd 'miss' - he's always been VERY relaxed about 'getting to places/stages' in general. Zeke - with Zeke I clean forgot, at ALL lol - he's been done and dusted for a while now and earlier than Brooke and Jake, but he's always done everything 'fast' lol since before he was born Much earlier for days and def waaay earlier for day sleep nappy-off.he came up to me one morning and said 'Mummy I wanna pee inna toy-lit' (he was about 12-18mths) and I went oh... that's right... meant to be doing something in that direction!!! I clean forgot! ![]() never used a potty, don't believe in them ![]() I don't push, rather suggest, talk about it, talk about who else goes la la la and just whenever whatever lots of nappy off time they'll work it out eventually

My Elijah (great name btw!) is 21 months and is doing the same thing as your Elijah - he tells me when he's done a poo. We have a potty sitting in the bathroom (good way for it not to be in the toilet if you don't like that) and he goes and sits on that when he wants to, but not consistently. He also will sit on the toilet too sometimes... I went a couple of days of putting him in undies, moreso just to see how he'd go. He doesn't really have any awareness of when he needs to go though. Or even if he is or has done a wee or poo on the toilet - he just thinks he has all the time!
How old is Elijah?

I chose 12-18 months because Lucas is 16months and the other day came racing in to me and clambered up on my chest in a huge sense of urgency and I asked him if he needed to do a poo and took him to the bathroom and he did one

We bought Emma's potty when she was about 13/14 months - just had it around, y'know? At 17/18 months she was pooing in it butI don't think she was TA really - she pooed like clockwork after her bath every night so we just sat her down to do it. Then she refused to for a while - but she was TT before she was 2 (in the daytime).
Alastair is very nearly 2. We've had the potty sitting out and about since about 16 months - not much interest until recently. About a month or so ago he started consistently telling me when he'd done poo, and sometimes wee too (usually onyl if it's a big wee i.e. his nappy's very wet) ... but still doesn't want to sit either on the little potty or the big one w' trainer seat. Frustrating, but we just keep offering. I doubt he'll be TT before the baby comes but I'd like him to be on his way. We do some nappy-free time but I stress about where he will make a mess.

I started toilet learning with my DDs a lot earlier than 12 months - but you didn't give me an option for that ;-) I did elimination communication EC fulltime with my second DD from around the time she was a month old. With my first DD we did very part-time EC (just for poos because it didn't occur to me to try for wees too!) from the time she was 4 months old.
Both of them were aware of their elimination needs from the start (and never lost it) and I just maintained that by changing them as soon as they were wet or dirty and giving them opportunities to go on the potty or toilet instead of ONLY in a nappy. We didn't ever need to do "toilet training" because both girls just took over more and more of their own toileting independently. I talked with them about their own elimination and mine so it was never a "foreign" concept that they had to learn in toddler-hood IYKWIM.
