Yeah, that's what I'd be worreid about - that Catie would just use them as a nappy anyway so perhaps it wouldn't really achieve anything. This morning she went for about 7 hours without going!! I hope she's drinking enough water today. She was wet when I got her up this morning and wore knickers and trackies (they actually stayed up!) until she went to bed just after 1pm - I got her to sit on the toilet then and she did a big wee. She wanted to wear knickers to bed again today for her nap, so I let her. I'll just give her the option.

This is all going too fast!!!!

Things sound like they are going really well!! Waking up dry from her day sleep is excellent!
I have no opinions about training pants as we never used them. Once Tiffany "got it" she just didn't have many accidents so they weren't needed. (And she's got a decent butt and thighs on her, so no fear of her trousers falling down!)
For my peace of mind in the car and stroller, I bought these washable mats called "Piddle Pads" from Toys R Us which you put under their bum in the carseat and pusher. They have a plastic lining with a towelling upper and a bit of absorbent material inbetween. She only needed them a couple of times for longer trips. We always take the potty in the car in case she can't hold on. Even though she's been fully day trained for 8 months now we still sometimes need to pull over and use it.

Keep up what you're doing as it sounds like it's working really well, and isn't stressful either. Well done!!

Oooh - put the potty in the car!!! Now there's something I need to do, thanks so much for that tiffanysmummy! We have been out and about for 2 days now without nappies (I did pack a spare change of clothes and a nappy though) and yesterday she held on for 7 hrs in morning and about 6 hours in the arvo!! I remember being the same at school age, not sure if I was like that at her age. I had just been wondering what to do if she needs ot go and we are not near a toilet - the potty in the car is a great idea.. in saying that I was quite prepared to have her wee in the gutter if she really needed to go - surely no-one would mind

So outings now are completely a new experience as I'm obsessing over where the nearest public toilet is. I keep askign her all day if she needs to go and I'm waiting for her to turn around and tell em where to go, because I think I'm annoying her... am I right in thinking I need to keep reminding/prompting her, or should I just let her go and see what happens? I kind of get the idea that she's made the change now and that's that. I also get the idea that I possibly could have done this at least a couple of weeks earlier with the same result - I just didn't expect her to be ready yet.

We went and bought some leggings today (yay, Best & Less had them on sale!) so her pants won't fall down - she's now back to a size 1 in one brand and a size 2 in another. Anyway, I'm rambling now. Oh, she woke this morning the first thing she said was, "Mum I did a wee" with a disapointed look on her face. She did have a nappy on, so it was fine, but she seemed a little sad about it. Do I just keep a night nappy on her till she starts wakign dry, or should I push our luck and try a night without one?? It seemed in the day she would wet a nappy if wearing it, but use the toilet if not... would the night one be the same - esp. if she's just weeing when she wakes in the morning and not actually weeing during the night? So many questions!!!

It's funny how the main focus of your life becomes where the nearest toilet is! It does settle down eventually.
I still ask Tiffany if she needs to go to the toilet, mostly before we leave the house, before we head home from being out, and if I think it's been a long time since she went. It's just something you'll need to experiment with. Some days I don't think to ask her at all and we get through ok. I think to start with it doesn't hurt to ask every now and again as they do forget if they are engrossed in something.
We had a day this week where Tiffany wet herself 3 times, which is not like her at all, so I've started asking her more often until she's back on track. (I think the fact I'm getting closer to having baby #2 is affecting her ATM.)

Lucky you getting leggings on special! Don't their bums look cute in knickers and leggings? I just love it when Tiffany wears hers!

As for night times, do you think she's weeing and then waking up, or waking and then weeing? Tiffany has finally mastered waking first, so we have had a good run of dry nappies as she now calls out to go to the toilet. I could probably let her go without a nappy at night now, but she's not ready to part with it and I'm not pushing it. I'd let her lead you, and just nappy the bed instead of her if she doesn't want a nappy on. Something waterproof with a towel on top, maybe with a folded sheet on top of that. We bought special mats but they were expensive and probably not necessary.

To keep a track of how the sleeps are going, we bought some little stickers and put one on the calender for each time she wakes up dry. She thinks that great, and I also bought some bigger pretty ones for her to wear. That way she can brag to Nanny about how clever she's been. We try to praise the successes and ignore the failures. It seems to be working.

I'm still not sure about whether she's weeing before or after waking... there have been a couple of nights recently when she did wee before 10pm, though and just slept all the way through - but I actually changed her because the smell was overwhelming when I went in her room and I didn't want her getting a rash or anything (it was sooo strong!).

I think I will just keep up with the night nappy until she says no to it or starts asking to go to the toilet on waking. I do ask her on waking anyway, or just take her if I'm awake enough (she's an early riser and is always awake before me), but so far she's already done the deed at some point in time either just before or just after waking (nappy's still warm).

I have heard of those mats (a friend told me about one she bougth today for about $50!!), but we already have a waterproof matress protector on the cot and I can sew something up myself if I need to (or just use a towel!).

Thanks for all the great advice in here. I am so stunned and proud of how quickly Catie has made this transition. She still squeals in delight everytime she does a wee on the toilet - and then proceeds to tell the world what she has done!!

Hi there,
We use waterproof mattress protectors (the full mattress thing) then over the bottom sheet (next to little person) we put a quilted waterproof mat that is not as long as them and tucks in. Neither were grossly expensive and we find the system works wonders - if a bed gets wet it is usually only a top sheet and the top protector (not too much bulk in the washing) but if they move off the top protector it doesn't mean a wet mattress. The full mattress one I actually prefer is a $10 job from Big W - just a so called breathable layer fitted protector. The top one is more costly but I can't believe I paid anything more than $20 for it and definitely not $50. For us, a plastic sheet would make for a very sweaty child. The other thing I have heard of is an underblanket or bottom sheet replacement of two layers of good polar fleece - I liked the idea but then realized it probably wasn't any cheaper than what I already had.
If it was me, if the little one is happy to wear a night nappy, then definitely wear one. - much less washing. We use cloth pull ups due to nappies being a no go zone - they arent as absorbent though.
Just a word on night toiletting. NIght dryness is dependent, apart from other things, on having matured enough to be producing enough ADH hormone that acts on the body to reduce wee production as well as having a big enough bladder and the ability to wake up before weeing (if needed). Our girls aren't wake up and go ones, they go before bed, and when they wake up in the morning - all going to plan, one is still full time in pull ups for nights.
enjoy the fun of no day nappies and cute little bottoms - my DD2 is smaller and younger at the no nappies stage, so I can see me making/buying for her winter wardrobe or she will be forever pulling up trousers stretched by DD1!!
cheers,

Okay, this will be the test big time - Catie flatly refused to wear a nappy to bed tonight!! She HAD to wear knickers (I really have to go buy her more knickers tomorrow as 5 pairs just aren't enough - I wasn't expecting to be using them full-time by now)... so I put a big towel on top of her bottom sheet (she also has a cot mattress protector under the bottom sheet which she's always had) and reminded her several times that as soon as she wakes she needs to call me so she can go use the toilet. I also put the potty right beside her cot so I can get her out and put her straight on it if need be. She's not interested in sleeping in her bed, and she doesn't climb out of the cot, so I have to be there to help her... I hope she holds on!! I'm certainly not expecting it to work, but if it did that would be so much easier than just having one nappy per day to wash - I don't have a full load to wash anymore...
